There are an abundance of journalists and broadcasters in many fields of communication, and so many have done an amazing job. One that has stood out in the sports journalism world is Clay Travis who had an unorthodox path to where he is today.

Travis today covers sports and how they are rooted in their own political circle. He covers sports politics and really any topic that happens to be occurring that week on his very own weekly shows. Before starting a career in sports journalism he actually attended law school but left to pursue sports.

He uses his witty talent and intelligence to cover topics on social media all on his own and he is the founder of his company Outkick. He covers sports politics on his show “Outkick the Coverage” (which is now a part of Fox Sports) and “Wins and Losses.”

He has brought a modern twist on sports journalism over twitter and has made an intimate connection with his audience. He is a great example of how journalism can be produced in many different ways other than through cable television.

Travis founded his company Outkick in 2011. After the great success of Outkick he signed a deal with Fox Sports to license his entire sports media brand which included Outkick the Coverage. He then started his weekly television show through Facebook, Twitter, and Periscope where he covers all manner of topics and has his very own radio show on Fox Sports Radio.

It is an amazing time to watch him and I believe the reason people gravitate towards his shows and opinions is because he uses his law degree to argue and debate points about sports and politics which leaves people in shock at how smart he is.

When it comes to his success, he has tapped into the medium of social media and merged that with his very own thoughts. He loved sports but had to leave law school to pursue his career.

According to the Vanderbilt website Travis said “I loved law school. My best friends are from law school. But I didn’t like practicing law,” he said. “You go into it thinking you’re going to be litigating Brown v. Board of Education, but no. Law is too slow for me. It takes years for cases to resolve.”

The reason for his success is his different approach to how broadcasting and journalism work. He puts his opinions and thoughts on social media which make the viewer feel a more personal connection to him. I admire him because he says what the truth is about a certain topic and is not afraid of what others think of his opinion which I can relate too. Other than his witty remarks his main line of success is his knowledge of sports and he has said he learned most of his sports knowledge just growing up watching and reading about anything sports.

What is surprising about him is how he started out because law and sports are completely different and the cool thing he did is integrate them both into his line of work. Travis also has had heated arguments about politics and when it comes to his political views he has said in the past he votes democratic but doesn’t mean he believes everything they say.

He is very open minded and forms opinions based on different situations and assesses every conversation he is in whether it be political or sports related. He backs up his arguments with facts against those who may not be fully educated on the topic. Travis may be looked at as a conservative or even a republican but he is very neutral and says what he thinks based on the topic.

He also has used social media in various ways compared to other broadcasters/journalists. He has his weekly show which airs live for people to interact with and watch.

Also the great thing about his show is that he broadcasts it from his house whenever he chooses which allows him to cover topics when they happen or tweet about them.

This gives the consumer what they want while it is fresh in their mind and this is great for making him memorable to people. The reason he is talked about and loved by viewers is because of the way he carries himself and his thoughts on things where he says what he wants and can do that because of the platform that social media has given him is what has made him successful.

Clay Travis is an amazing personality who uses social media and his law degree to really further his career in media. He is an amazing journalist with lots to say about sports and the society that surrounds it.
